For jigsaws, the useful rule is roughly twenty pieces per year of age up to about age eight, then whatever they can be persuaded to sit still for. Board games are worth choosing by round length rather than by age: a game that takes forty minutes will not finish on a school night. Look for games that survive a missing piece, and for boxes that actually close after the first week. Games are also the only category on this site where the point is partly the adult playing too.
